Preparing the Bottles. Either glass bottles or plastic bottles with collapsible liners can be used for nursing. Plastic bottles with collapsible liners are, however, particularly beneficial because the baby does not swallow as much air as is possible with the glass type.

If you have chosen to use the traditional glass bottles, you will need eight 8-ounce (240ml) bottles, at least two 4-ounce (120ml) bottles, and various nipples, caps, and hoods.

You can use the aseptic method of making up the bottles or the terminal method. (1) Aseptic method (sterilized formula poured into sterilized bottles): First, prepare a clean work surface. Then wash your hands thoroughly. Remove bottles and other equipment from the sterilizer. Place them on clean paper towels. Boil some water, then let it cool for a few minutes.

The formula can be made up in bulk (a 24-hour supply), mixing milk powder or evaporated milk with the boiled water in a sterilized pitcher. Or one bottle at a time can be prepared by measuring the ingredients directly into the bottle. For storing in the refrigerator, invert the nipples in the bottle. (Handle the nipples by the rims only.) At the same time make up two 4-ounce (120ml) bottles with plain, boiled water.

(2) Terminal method (formula sterilized at the same time as bottles): Make up the formula as directed by the physician. The water does not have to be boiled first. Pour the formula into clean bottles, then place the bottles in the sterilizer.

Burping a Baby. All babies swallow air when they suck, whether nursed at the breast or on the bottle. The air collects as a bubble in the baby’s stomach, causing discomfort and sometimes pain. The baby stops nursing and begins to cry. Many physicians advise a pause about halfway through the feeding in order to burp the baby.

The amount of air a baby swallows depends on both the flow of milk from breast or bottle and on the baby’s sucking ability.

It is important that all air bubbles are expelled at the end of the feeding as well, or the baby will cry soon after being put to bed.

There are many different kinds of nipples available for baby bottles. Some are long, some short; some are made of hard rubber, some are soft. The nipples can have a small, medium, or large hole. Buying a selection allows a mother to find the one that is most comfortable and most effective in her baby’s mouth. The ability to suck also varies according to the baby’s age and whether he or she is hungry. A one-week-old baby who is slightly jaundiced and sleepy, for example, needs a medium-hole or large-hole nipple. A baby who is in this condition, sucking through a small hole, swallows a lot of air in an effort to get the milk, then falls asleep exhausted and uncomfortable. But if the hole is too large, the milk gushes through so fast that the baby may choke immediately or vomit afterward.

Spitting. A baby who nurses too quickly may vomit slightly after the feeding. Throwing up a small amount of milk is often called spitting and is nothing to worry about. Even if the baby occasionally throws up the entire feeding, there is no need for alarm. If the vomiting occurs repeatedly, however, consult a physician.

When burping a baby in the upright position, rest the baby’s chin on your shoulder and be sure to protect your clothing in case the baby should spit or vomit.

Gas Pains. A baby who has swallowed too much air may be unable to expel the bubbles by burping immediately after being fed. The resulting discomfort can last for a few days and demands a great deal of patience. Be aware of a reliable sign that indicates gas: the baby may take two or three gulps of milk, draw away from the breast or bottle, and arch the back.

Nurse the baby slowly and try to relax. Walking slowly round the room with the baby in your arms sometimes helps to start him or her nursing again. Another method is to change the baby to a different nursing position, so that he or she sits upright or lies flat, for example. When the condition improves, make sure that the baby returns to the usual feeding position.

Inexperienced parents or baby sitters commonly try to bring up a baby’s gas by striking him or her sharply on the back. But this only makes the baby tense and even less able to release the bubbles. Sometimes such patting may actually cause the baby to throw up some milk.

Reluctant Nursers. Because the liver does not work at full capacity for some time after birth, some babies may become slightly jaundiced. This condition makes a baby sleepy and disinclined to suck during the first week, when it is important that a baby drinks enough. To encourage a baby to nurse, push gently and rhythmically with the forefinger under the baby’s chin. But be patient, because the baby may fall asleep again.

Restless Nursers. Older babies who for one reason or another feel insecure tend to be restless at nursing time. They wave their arms about, scratching at the bottle or hitting the breast. Such a baby should be held close to the body and wrapped in a blanket from the waist down. The baby’s arms may be left free if they are kept out of the way. One arm can be tucked behind the feeder’s back, while the other hand can be held. Hold the baby firmly, but not roughly, because this may make the baby struggle even more.

Was your mom the coolest mom on the block? Mother of the Year,
every year? Admit it, she continues to inspire you with wisdom
and patience you would not have believed possible without her
example. As we move thru our lives and become parents ourselves,
we appreciate our moms more and more.

Moms are funny, though. There’s a saying, “Only your mother can
truly embarrass you.” I’d say that’s pretty much true. At least
in our family. I can embarrass my 13 year old daughter, Rachel,
without even trying. Especially since I work at her school. It’s
not that I try. Not hard, anyway. Much of the time, it’s simply
that I’m there, being cool. Or what I think is cool. Maybe
that’s why she’s embarrassed.

Remember, Rachel is 13. Most of the time she doesn’t want me to
know she likes me. She recently took a trip to another state with
her grandparents. We spoke on the phone the day after she left,
and she actually told me she loved me and missed me. That was a
rare treat, and it got me to thinking… I’m sure Rachel loves
me. She might even think I’m cool. She just doesn’t say so very
often and when she did, it sure felt good. Does my mom know how I
feel about her?

When was the last time you told your mother, or your stepmother,
if you have one, how much you appreciate her contribution in your
life? Are you sure she knows how much you appreciate her? It’s
so easy to get caught up in everyday life and fail to do the
things that really matter.

Have you told your mom how much she means to you lately? Better
yet, have you told her in writing? You know how moms are – we
keep everything our kids make for us – no matter how old they
are when they make it.

Are you a superwoman? Are you a multi-tasking mom?

If you are time challenged, how to you ensure your family gets proper meals. Proper meals as in tasty food that is very nutritious, not prepacked, heavy in additives, high in fat, low in nourishment types of food?

Nothing beats a good home cooked meal. Your kids would benefit from meals cooked from fresh ingredients. Sure, they can subsist on fast food, but in the long run, are all the health problems related to junk food worth the modern convenience? Wouldn’t it be better to feed your family, yourself included, food cooked from nutritious fresh food and vegetables?

That’s an ideal many moms strive for in this busy world. So much to do, so little time to do it all. Our careers take out a lot from us. Even stay-at-home moms don’t have it easy. In fact, it is easier to go to work than to face screaming, demanding children twenty-four hours a day. By the way, are they screaming demanding children because of their body’s reaction to all those food additives. Something to think about, isn’t it?

How do you do it? Serve home cooked meals for dinner every night, when you have to work all day?

My mom’s a superwoman. Every time, she cooks anything, she quadruples the portion and freezes the excess into single meal portions. Think about those instant meals you’d buy at the supermarket. Get home, take them from the freezer, dump them in the oven and serve them to the family. Now what if you could do the same with real home cooked meal?

Invest in freezer bags. On a weekend or during the holidays, go on a cooking spree and cook all the meals your family would love for dinner over the next week (or weeks depending on your schedule). Let the food cool completely before you put them into the bags, taking care to put enough for one family meal in each bag. Deep freeze them so each morning, you can take one bag out from the deep freezer to defrost slowly in the fridge. When you get home, you can microwave the food and serve your home cooked meal to the family. We do that with chicken in gravy. You can do that with virtually any meal, just make sure you put the date you prepared the meal on the bag so you won’t end up eating food that was cooked several years ago.

Okay, so precooked, home made meals still isn’t as good as food you cook the day itself. So what’s a busy woman going to do?

Get a crockpot. Serious. that’s what my colleague advised me when I got married and wanted to have home cooked meals for my husband and myself. The beauty about crockpot cooking is its convenience. Before leaving for work, dump the meat and veggies into the pot, add water, switch on the pot and leave for work. It doesn’t matter if the meat is frozen or not. Over the course of the day, the meat will thaw and cook with the veggies in the pot. By the time you get home, you’ll have dinner waiting for you. All you need to do is cook the rice.

For most work at home moms, the challenge really is finding the time (and the motivation) to get into a regular exercise regimen that fits their schedules. With both family and work putting pressure on them, sometimes mothers would hardly find time to go out and do some physical exercises like aerobics, jogging, and biking. If one is not too keen on finding the time to go to the gym and do a regular workout, a home fitness equipment would bring the same benefits, with more convenience.

Here are just some of the benefits that you may gain from having your own home fitness equipment:

1. You can use it anytime you please.

You have the option of doing your exercises either in the morning, before breakfast, or a few hours before bedtime. You don’t have to follow a set schedule, much like you have to if you signed up for a gym program. This means more flexibility in how you would go about your day. Just remember to fit on your schedule, at least 30 minutes to one hour of physical exercises at least three times a week.

2. You don’t need to wait in line.

You no longer have to limit your time using your home fitness equipment, just as you would at a gym. You can use it for no matter how long, without worrying about another person waiting for you to get done.

3. You save some cash.

With gym programs, you normally have to pay for the services of gym staff and trainers. You would be asked to pay a membership fee, whether or not you use the gym facilities. With your own home fitness equipment, you would only have to do a one time investment and some power cost. Still, if you compare the amount of money you spend on your own home exercise program, you would notice a considerable amount of money saved every year.

When choosing the right kind of home exercise equipment, make sure that you find out some information about it first and make some price comparisons before making your purchase. You can choose among the many brands available for home fitness equipment such as the treadmill, the stationery bike, elliptical trainer, which are often designed for home use. Make sure that you choose the right brand and model that will fit your home space. Find a supplier that provides service warranties or even lifetime guarantees, to save some money from future maintenance costs.

Moms work hard, and get little recognition for their work. Most moms juggle taking care of children, keeping their home in order, getting food on the table, and keeping everyone in the house clothed and groomed. This means they stay busy. In addition to that, many moms also have full or part time jobs. Most moms do not get a break very often. A mom’s night out is a great thing for moms. The following is a look at some of the reasons a mom’s night out is important:

Reason one: It allows moms to have an identity outside of mommy. When moms go on a mom’s night out, they do it without their children. This means they do not have to answer to “mom” all night, and they get to do something that they like doing, rather than something their kids like to do. Sometimes, as a mom, you get so used to sacrificing your wishes and needs for those of your kids that you forget what yours are. You forget that you much prefer Papa John’s pizza to Chuck E Cheese’s. You forget that movies have ratings other than G, and that you can buy things at Wal-Mart besides diapers and sippy cups. On a mom’s night out you get back in touch with the stuff you enjoy, and reconnect with the person you were before you had kids.

Reason two: It gives mom a chance to take a break. Kids whine. Kids cry. Kids are needy, and have little patience. Even the kindest, most patient mother can get fed up with kids, and need a little break from the high pitched wails and complaints. Being a mom is a thankless job. You take your kids to McDonald’s and instead of thanking you for a fun lunch out, they complain that you got them chicken nuggets when they wanted a hamburger. So, a mom’s night out is a much needed break that can help moms restore their sanity and give them the energy and mental reboot to deal with the fussing and whining of their kids. Part of being a mom means always putting your children first. However, if you do this too much, you start to live unhappily. So, having a night every now and then where you come first is critical for staying that happy loving mom you want to be.

Reason three: It allows for adult conversation. Mom’s night out is important because most moms, especially stay at home moms, get very little interaction outside of their children. Kids have demanding schedules. Kids need naps. Kids get grumpy when they overdo it. Kids have little league, preschool, dance classes, etc. which means that moms run from here to there, and their conversations consist of, “Say please.” “What did I tell you about whining?” “Did you remember your shin guards.” “I said no”. “What do you want for dinner?” When mom has a night out, they do not have to talk about poop, diapers, manners, or anything else mom-ish. They can talk politics, religion, world affairs, etc. This means Dora, Little Einstiens, Winnie the Pooh, preschool, and other kid topics can be left out. This is good for mom’s mind, and for her sanity.

When Mom gets her night out once in a while, she will be a happier and more fulfilled mother.

Many people don’t have a lot of time to cook. And here’s one reason: a lot of people simply don’t cook well (or at all). Not really surprising when you take into account that they have a lot of other things to do. Sometimes fast food is their only alternative in the midst of a busy day.

Quick, healthy, inexpensive meals aren’t easy to plan, that’s the problem. People who have trouble with this, however, must not be paying much attention because between cooking shows, the Internet, and a wide variety of easy prepare wholesome foods at grocery stores, it’s not hard to come up with a seven day menu that satisfies everyone at the table. The entire family will like these many of these dinner ideas.

Corn dogs are an all American tradition, usually served at state fairs and by street vendors. While a little on the unhealthy side, it’s quick and good to eat. Coat the hot dogs with batter made of flour, corn meal, milk, salt, sugar and baking powder, then fry them until golden. If you want the feel of the fair, insert a Popsicle stick.

In the old days dinner and supper were two different things, one a main meal and the other a lighter snack. Social status and job type dictated changes in this over time. Physical laborers needed an afternoon dinner to keep up their strength throughout the grueling day. As times change and we move away from regular meals at home, dinner has become the anchor that keeps families together and signals the end of the out of the home portion of the day and the beginning of at home leisure time. The meaning of supper and dinner have merged. That doesn’t mean the meal has to be large, especially for people watching their waist lines. Try a roast chicken salad.

Crock pots were made for busy schedules. Set it up in the morning then enjoy a great meal at night. Great food is possible in a crock pot, the entire meal too. Add some meat and some potatoes cut into quarters for a terrific pot roast. Stop on the way home for a hot loaf of bread. Or, skip the bread to avoid the extra calories.

The possibilities are endless with simple but delicious meals like veal cutlets, pork chops, even steaks on the grill. Use Google or Yahoo to find more great dinner ideas. The Internet is loaded with all sorts of recipes and cooking tips.

Many of you have expressed the challenge of not having enough time to accomplish all your needed tasks and not being organized. Having good organization and management skills is absolutely imperative to your business. Being well organized can greatly affect your successfulness. Applying a few of the following tips will help you become more organized and make better use of your time.

1. Learn to delegate

Most of us are mothers and as moms we tend to automatically take on everything and are used to doing everything ourselves. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with delegating different tasks.

2. Set business hours

One way to keep yourself and your business organized is to set regular business hours. You know Monday through Friday 1 – 4 or whatever times works best for you and your family and try to stick to it as much as possible.

3. Keep your office organized

Have a place for everything keeping like things together.

4. Group like activities/errands

Keep track of errands that need done and try scheduling most of them on the same day.

5. To-do lists

Having a to-do list keeps you motivated and lets you know what needs done at all times.

6. Plan for tomorrow

Make it a habit to review the following days schedule at the end of each day.

Take a few minutes right now and start a list of everything you need to get done. Take that list and re-write it by placing the things that most need accomplished and place them at the top of your list. Once you’re finished get back to work and cross off tasks as you go. Not only will you find yourself getting more accomplished you’ll also find a sense of fulfillment.
