Today, almost 50% of women participate in the work force. Many of them have children and some are single mothers. Taking care of a family and dealing with the demands and pressures of a job lead to stress. Therefore, working moms need to relax, as chronic stress is linked to health problems.

According to the American Psychological Association, stress affects women more than men, and women perceive themselves as having higher levels of stress than men. Perhaps juggling the family and professional responsibilities at the same time, or the demands of supporting a family, are to blame. Whatever the cause, stress is stress, and we know it has a negative impact on health: it impedes emotional, physical, and cognitive wellbeing.

The body’s stress response is a natural response to life’s challenges. However, unrelieved stress may lead to health problems, and over time, stress can affect the immune system, heart, stomach, reproductive system, and lungs.

Chronic stress decreases the effectiveness of the immune system, so people who are chronically stressed get frequent colds that tend to linger. Long-term stress has also been linked with high blood pressure, arrhythmia, arthrosclerosis, coronary artery disease, and heart failure.

People under constant pressure experience tension that may lead to intense neck, shoulder, or back pain. They may experience heartburn or even develop ulcers. Stress can also have a negative impact on one’s asthma.

Although we cannot escape stress in our lives, we should make an effort to decrease its impact on our health. For example, regular exercise has shown to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. It also improves mood and sleep quality. Therefore, I would like to encourage all moms (professionals and homemakers) to find an enjoyable form of physical activity that can be squeezed into your busy schedules. You have only one you, so take care of the you that you have!

Here are some ideas for working moms to distress:

Walking
Running
Swimming
Yoga
Dancing
Jumping rope

By: Barbara Hillary, PhD

About the Author:
As a single mom, you face unique financial challenges that women with supportive husbands do not face. As such, you need to be aware of programs that you can use to help your family financially. The government and many private organizations have options available to help single moms with their financial needs.

One common need that single moms face is health insurance. Your employer may not offer health insurance, or the premiums may be too high for you to afford. The government has programs that you can use to get insurance for your children. The most common government program is Medicaid. While Medicaid is for those on limited incomes, the income guidelines are determined based on family size, so you should see if you qualify. If you do not qualify for Medicaid, consider the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). The income guidelines for SCHIP will be set by your state, and they are higher than Medicaid. You may be able to get health insurance for yourself through this program, depending on your state.

If you are looking for utility assistance, child care assistance, food banks, and other types of assistance programs and don’t know where to look, try dialing 2-1-1 on your phone. You can use this free service to find the programs you need. With one phone call, you can find out about assistance programs you qualify for in your area. Not all areas have the 2-1-1 program, but you can find out if yours does by simply trying the number.

If you are ready to buy a home, there are programs for single moms to help with the home buying process. To start, talk to your local housing authority. This organization may be able to point you towards assistants programs in your area. You can also talk to a Housing and Urban Development (HUD) counselor. You may be able to buy a house through HUD, and HUD has several mortgage assistance programs for you to consider. The organization will also help you find a house that qualifies for the assistance program. Your counselor will be able to help you work through the process.

Single moms may face a rough road, but the good news is that there is help available. Take advantage of the programs you qualify for, because you are, after all, doing the job of two people. With financial assistance programs like these, you can ease up some of the strain on your monthly household budget or get some of the things you need for your family but simply cannot afford on your own.

Working from home can be absolutely the best decision you’ve ever made for your family. As a work at home mom, you can attend school trips, volunteer as a teachers aide and play mommy nurse when your children get sick without fear of losing your job or lost wages.

If you are considering working from home, first think about what you are good at. Do you have strong organizational abilities? Consider becoming an administrative assistant. Do you type fast and accurately? Transcription would be perfect for you. If you have a proficiency in a certain academic subject, you can find work as an online tutor or teacher (degree/certifications required).

Whatever your interest, there are jobs–it’s just a matter of finding one that’s legitimate. If you do a Google search for legitimate work at home opportunity. How many results appear? Over 700,000. That’s a lot of results to sort through and the vast majority of them are membership based websites which charge a fee for free information.

For example, one website boasts that you can earn $5000 /month from your kitchen table. All you have to do is join the website at $39.95/ month to sort through their job listings. Then there are other companies who actually do hire at home workers but they either have no intention of actually paying or reject all of your work as inferior.

In order to find a legitimate work at home job, you will have to do your due diligence. Any company that requests payment upfront so that you can begin to work for them is a scam. Any company that requests payment upfront so they an train you is a scam. Any company that charges a fee to join so that you can find job listings is also a scam. Where do you think they get their listings from? The internet, of course. You can do the same thing for free you just have to know where to look and what to look for.

You can start by going to large employment databases like Monster and Careerbuilder. Type in the phrase “work at home”. Companies who hire home workers often post their jobs at reputable websites like these.

Another alternative is searching on free work at home websites. If they don’t charge a fee, you have nothing to lose. Some of these websites even have forums where jobs are posted frequently by the members. You can also gain a lot of insight into the lives of a work at home mom to see if its really what you want to do.

If you are certain that you want to work from home, consider the list below. Included are real jobs in a variety of fields. These companies are all looking for motivated individuals with basic computer knowledge and a efficient home-working environment. If you meet these requirements, please consider applying to the following companies.

Customer Service
Alpine Access
LiveOps
West

Medical Transcription and Coding
LexiCode
In Record Time
Health Information Partners

Typing
Speak-Write
NetTranscripts

As with any opportunity, you must do your research before accepting a job offer. As a rule, legitimate companies will have contact information other than just email, and will not ask you for money upfront. I do know that a few companies will ask you to pay for your own background check. In my experience, even these companies have proven to be above board. The above list is only 11 of 102 legitimate work at home job listings. All with active links that can be found at getrichmom.com.Ann Brown is a 32 year old freelance writer and MOM from Phoenix, AZ .

The century has turned, and thank goodness for that-our last one was a tumultuous one for birthing moms. The 1900s saw countless practices that spanned prenatal care, labor, delivery, and post-partum care that are now widely considered to be barbaric. We developed birth-defect producing drugs to alleviate morning sickness, strapped down and sedated women who were giving birth, banned fathers from delivery rooms. The 20th century approach to labor and delivery focused largely on the role of the doctor. Yet, in recent times, the focus is returning to the expecting woman.

As the focus shifts away from doctor-aided births and hospitalized labor, the need for a health insurance maternity plans that address new ways of thinking has arisen. Just as women throughout the world have been giving birth without the help of doctors since the beginning of humanity, so also are modern women returning to choosing different support professional for giving birth (most commonly, midwives and doulas) and even different establishments for giving birth (such as birthing centers or the choice to give birth at home).

So, are there health insurance maternity plans that address these emerging conditions? Will a woman who wants a midwife to deliver her baby stand a chance at finding an insurance company who will pay the costs? In this day and age, is it always cheaper to choose traditional hospital care, or are there some progressive companies that have listened to changes in women’s tastes?

Fortunately, many insurance companies are beginning to come around and offer health insurance maternity options that stray from the 20th century mold. The best way to find such plans is to take advantage of modern online rate quote search tools, which can collect data robust enough to determine whether flexibility in maternity care options is a priority for you.

Are you on the computer all night, every night? If this sound like you, then the chances are, we could call you a WAHM! In case you are thinking I have just insulted you by calling you a WAHM, I want to let you know that it stands for a Work At Home Mom.

Moms looking to work from home need to realize that it is just as hard, if not harder, to work from home than it is to work outside the home. When you go to your ‘job’ everyday, it is easy for your family to see that you are working. When you work from home, your family may not really consider you to be working. The amount of times you will probably get interrupted with questions and comments, many of them being completely unnecessary of course!

The children might be trying to interrupt you in order to get your attention – they didn’t really need you to get up and get the DVD for them! This is why moms looking to work from home really need to balance out their time carefully, to make sure that the kids, and hubby, don’t feel neglected.

Moms looking to work from home need to find an appropriate way to make it clear to their families that they are indeed working, even if they are still at home. Work hours need to be work hours and rest time needs to be just that also.

Moms looking to work from home could consider some of the following points to assist them in maintaining a good balance.

Goals – set them and involve everyone when you do. Getting your family onside with your business is important so that they can understand and appreciate just how important your time is. You can even set the goals together as a family. One of my goals is to take my family on a holiday, so I enlisted the help of the children and we chose a destination. Now they know why I am working so hard and they also have a holiday to look forward to when we reach our goals.

Working hours – for Moms looking to work from home it is important to set working hours early on, so that you and your family get into a healthy habit. It will hopefully alleviate the countless interruptions – although, trust me, they will still happen from time to time, and you need to be aware of that. Perhaps you could develop an effective system where the family knows that after you have been working for a certain period of time, there may be a trip to the park.

Share – moms looking to work from home could think about sharing the business with family members. This of course would depend on the age of your children and their capabilities. If you have a school-aged child, you may be able to put them in charge of tidying up a pile of papers, or keeping pens and other stationary items in the correct spot. I actually gave my daughter, who is 10, some things to type on her computer. The key here is, I didn’t really need them, but it kept her occupied and she thought she was helping me in my business. She actually felt a great deal of satisfaction from her efforts.

There are lots of little tips and tricks that you can do to make your business successful, and include every member of the family at the same time. It is important that you do, otherwise you will probably start to experience guilt and anxiety that you are not able to get everything done for everyone all the time.

Moms looking to work from home always need to keep their goal in mind. When it the going feels tough and you are not sure that you can continue, take some time out with your family, renew your thoughts and keep your goal clearly in both yours and your family’s minds.

In today’s times ladies are still wanting to stay home with their kids but because of the economy and other issues staying home is not an option. However there are a few businesses for stay at home moms. There is always many advantages to staying home with your kids. Usually the first concern is financial stability. But there are ways ladies can stay home and raise their kids and help with the finances.

One of the most common businesses for stay at home moms that is fairly easy is keeping other people’s kids. There is no up front cost. It does take a lot of effort but it is very doable. Opening your home to keep other kids is something that ladies do for several reasons. The first reason is it allows ladies to keep their own kids.

When you open up your house for childcare, there are a few things to consider: how many extra kids would you want to keep, will the parents provide their lunches and snacks and what are the hours you would want kids in your home.

Parents really do enjoy taking their kids to a home-care verses a daycare. In home-care the kids get more one on one time then with a daycare Remember it is your business so you set the times, the pricing and guidelines.

Other businesses for stay at home moms are network marketing companies. With network marketing you sell some kind of product whether it is merchandise or a service. The other part of network marketing is to recruit people who want and desire to become successful.

With these businesses for stay at home moms, or anyone in general, there are up front cost. It is a business and you have to invest.

For example, if you want to open a McDonald’s you would have to make an investment in McDonald’s.

The same with network marketing. When you make the investment into a network marketing business you are more likely going to work hard to make sure you succeed and provide for your part of the finances.

There are other businesses for stay at home moms but these are just two that are easy to find or work. Both of these options do take time but they both allow ladies to stay home with their kids. When trying to decide if being a stay at home mom is right for you just make sure you look at your options.

As a single mom, you may be looking for dating tips because you would like to enter the dating scene and find love, but maybe you are not sure about it.

You might ask yourself if it’s right as a mother to date, or even if you think it is fine, can you have any good success with it and find a great man?

OK, let’s discuss these questions one by one…

Question #1: Is this really right for a single mom to date?

The short answer is: Yes, absolutely!

It’s true that you are a mother and have responsibilities for your kids, but you are still a woman with a heart that wants to “love” and “feel loved”.

So why not go for what your heart desires and deserves?

Yes, there are some people who still seem to have problem accepting and respecting single mothers who date. They might tell you it’s selfish or ask “what about your children?”

But being a mother doesn’t have any conflicts with going out there, having fun, and meeting men. Single moms CAN date, kiss, and even have sex.

So don’t pay attention to what other people might think. You know how much you love your kids and what a great mother you are.

Question #2: Is it really possible for you to have success with dating?

Do single mothers have any good chance to succeed in dating, find a great man, and build a great relationship?

Again, the answer is, absolutely yes!

There are just some things that you need to learn first…

First of all, it’s necessary that you find out who you are and what you want from your life. Find your inner goals and dreams and make a plan to go for them.

Then, not only you will become more happy and fulfilled in your life, but you will also attract much better men who have a great personality and know what they want in their life too.

Another important tip to increase your success in the dating scene, is to educate yourself about dating tips.

You can also search for general “dating tips” in Google because when it comes to love and dating, it’s a universal art and the rules are almost the same for all ages and people.

For example, it’s important that you learn how to have a successful first date by asking the right first date questions.

Because your first date can really make or break your relationship, so it’s important that you have a good conversation by asking the right and smart questions.

Also questions will help you learn that person better and decide if he is the kind of person you want.

Wish you much success with your dates!

I met Jamal at a club during a friend’s birthday party. He was attractive, flirtatious and overly confident, which was strangely off-putting and intriguing at the same time. While the strobe lights flashed and the music pounded, we exchanged numbers. When the phone rang the next day, I was excited to find out more about him.

Now there is no such thing as the perfect man, but there is such a thing as a good fit. And Jamal was not a good fit. Early on in our conversations, he revealed that he had an infant daughter living in another state, was barely paying child support, and had not seen his little girl in months. The red flag went up for me immediately.

As a single mother of a 3-year-old daughter, I was turned off. Needless to say, Jamal didn’t last long.

Dating as a single mother is very difficult because there are so many things to take into consideration. You are not as carefree as the next girl, and your decisions about who to date will have an impact on you as well as your child. So here are five tips for making the dating process a little easier to navigate.

1. Know What You Want

This is actually a great tip for any woman, but especially single mothers. Knowing what you want out of a relationship and the type of man you want to be with prevents you from wasting your time. If you have been through enough bad relationships, you’ll have an idea of what you want. Someone who values fidelity. Someone who respects your goals. Someone who isn’t insecure. I had been through a relationship that lasted three and a half years and involved so many bad elements that I felt like I had been in five awful relationships all at once. By the time everything was over, I had a really good idea of what I would not put up with and how I wanted to feel when I was with someone.

If you have not been through a bad relationship, do a little happy dance around the room! When you are done, sit down and write down all of the qualities you are looking for in a man and in a relationship. In Jamal’s case, we did not share the same value for parenting so he did not make the cut. Once you have written these things down, review the list whenever you meet someone. Sometimes a pretty face or a charming personality can make us forget what is important to us.

2. Think About Your Kids

I know this seems obvious, but there are so many women who get into relationships without thinking about the effects it will have on their children. Realize that if the relationship becomes serious, this is someone who will be an influence in your child’s life. That means, if they have a potty-mouth, your children will be exposed to that. If they drink too much, your children will see it. If they lose their temper when you argue, your children will be right there. Identify the person’s characteristics and think about whether you want your children exposed to that. Things witnessed in childhood can have a lasting effect.

3. The Six Month Rule

It can take a while to see a person’s true colors or to determine whether or not a relationship is really going somewhere. And in the beginning, you may just want to have fun and not take it too seriously. For these reasons, I suggest enacting the “Six Month Rule,” which means shielding your children from the person you’re dating for at least six months. This is good for so many reasons. One, it results in one-on-one quality time that often gets hampered when children are running around. Two, it allows you to get to know the guy before introducing him to your children. And three, it prevents your children from getting attached to someone who may not be around long. When my husband and I started dating, he would come over after 8PM – my daughter’s bedtime.

4. Find a Good Dad

By this I d not mean rush out and look for a father for your children! Being a good boyfriend does not automatically mean he will be “Father of the Year.” In your case, you want both. Make sure he has a love of children, is responsible, values the role of a father and wants to spend time with his kids. Also, make sure he does not have any hang-ups about raising someone else’s child. It is important that he will eventually be comfortable raising your child as his own.

5. Strike a Balance

Once you are in a serious relationship with a man who shares your values, meets your standards, is great Dad-material, and has met your children, you will need to make sure there is a healthy balance in your life between mother and girlfriend. If the scale is tipped to one side or the other, your relationships will suffer. When I met my husband, I had devoted every day to my daughter so it was difficult to make that necessary shift. Other women may get so caught up in their new relationships that they spend less and less time with their children. As a woman, finding this healthy balance can be difficult, but once you have mastered it, you will see the benefits.

Dating wisely as a single mom will result in a happier future for both you and your children. The need to date responsibly for my daughter surely saved me from additional heartbreak and helped me find the man I am married to today. By using these tips, you will be investing in your own happiness as well as your family’s. Happy dating!

You know the saying ‘breast is best’? well it’s true! there is no better nourishment for your baby than breast milk as it is rich in vitamins and nutrients and will help your baby grow up to be as healthy as is possible. As well as offering many benefits to the baby breast feeding also offers a number of health benefits to the breast feeding mom.

1. Weight Loss – It has been shown that breastfeeding actually helps the mother lose the extra weight put on during pregnancy and amazingly plays a role in reducing the effects of post-natal depression that can often strike new moms. Studies also suggest that moms who breastfeed have been shown to have a lower risk of breast cancer and osteoporosis.

2. Finances – From a financial point of view breastfeeding is an absolute winner- it’s free! Formula milk can be expensive and in these increasingly resource-scarce times don’t under-estimate the cost to your utility bills of all the washing and boiling of bottles.

3. Environmental – Everybody knows the importance of conserving energy and recycling. Breastfeeding is the ultimate in recycling – your food is processed by your body and recycled as nutritious milk for your baby. So from an environmental point of view breastfeeding is a ‘no-brainer’ – it is the ‘greenest’ way to feed your baby – no trash, no products, no mess: just you, your baby and your breasts!

4. Bonding – Breast feeding also helps form a bond between you and your baby, psychologically, through the very act of breast feeding and also physically due to the actions of the hormone Oxytocin, released during breastfeeding, which is nicknamed the ‘love hormone’. This natural chemical instills a sense of calm and well-being for both mother and child.

Nowadays many moms enjoy the luxury of being able to work for home and being able to take care of the children. Work from home moms are able to supplement their family income without the hassle of going to work each day, hiring baby-sitters or taking the children to daycare.

One way of making good money being a work from home mom is by becoming a Virtual Assistant. There are a lot of companies which hire people to work as virtual assistants for different reasons: they don’t have enough offices (or don’t have offices at all), live in small towns and cannot find somebody suitable to hire, etc.
What you have to do as virtual assistant is:

-	email reports to the manager/consultant, etc.
-	check electronic correspondence, answer mail
-	prepare PowerPoint presentations for a speaker
-	book flight tickets, rent cars, rent hotel rooms, etc.
-	answer phone, take messages
-	inform your superior about potential clients, offers, etc.

One of the advantages of a working from home mom, as virtual assistant, is that you can work for several companies/people in the same time as you don’t have to waste time on going to work or dressing up. As you accumulate experience you can earn a lot of money without having to leave your home.

Another way of making money as a work from home mom is by working with a direct sales company and become their Sales Representative or Consultant. What you need in order to be successful is patience to look for a company which is suitable for you and one that will create substantial income to become a successful work from home mom.

Also you have to be a people oriented person, to be persuasive and like to be involved in sales. Women are renowned to be very good Direct Sales Representatives or Consultants as they are able to communicate with people more easily than men. If you are not a people person you need to be a part of a company that has the systems in place to do the calling for you teaching you how to market.

A very important aspect in choosing a direct sales company, is believing in what you do, in what you advertise. Also you have to be dedicated and perseverant: sometimes you fail to convince your clients. You have to constantly improve your marketing strategies but don’t be too aggressive. You will lose your potential clients! Again, to increase your success as a work from home mom you need to partner with a company that has the systems in place to teach, train and develop your skills.

Also, work from home moms can do a large variety of freelance jobs: selling/buying stuff on sites like eBay; typing/clerical (transcribing handwritten text, Word processing, data processing, etc); writing articles for websites, proofreading, editing, writing summaries, etc.; testing products (sent by companies at your home); blogging on websites or on your own website; taking paid surveys, etc.

What you have to consider is following different threads as these kinds of jobs don’t usually offer a steady income. Involve in several projects as some people you are working with may delay your payments, etc. All in all you can be a successful work from home mom if you make a decision to do your research and partner up with those that have already achieved the success that you desire.
